An excellent start to the new school year at DBIS Secondary School

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

It has been a fantastic first five days back at school for students and staff at DBIS Secondary School. I hope that your children are feeling settled into the start of a new and exciting year here, which will offer them many opportunities to take on a range of challenges and develop themselves in a variety of ways.

On a personal level I have been delighted to experience the engagement of students and staff, as well as parents, over these opening days. By actively engaging with all of our stakeholders and the wider community, there will be many opportunities to build upon the successes of previous years. I am looking forward to getting to know many more of our students and parents over the coming weeks and months. The first of these opportunities happens this evening – Wednesday the 21st of August – with two presentations to parents. There is a presentation for Year 10 parents introducing IGCSE’s and also a presentation for Year 12 parents to introduce the A level system. We look forward to having the opportunity to speak to many of you this evening.

I would like to briefly highlight one of the school’s early successes of the new academic year, which has been our examination results. I have provided some information about the A-level successes below. These results are now known by both students and teachers. We will look forward to the rest of the IGCSE and GCSE results, which will be released this week.

Examination results celebrations

It is celebrations all round at DBIS as the Class of 2019 received their A level results last week, with nearly all students winning places at their first choice University. The School’s first ever A level results demonstrate great achievements across the curriculum with 31% of all A level grades achieved ranging from A*- A and 62% graded A*- B. The Class of 2020 have also enjoyed much success with 56% of AS examinations taken graded at A – B and 73% graded A – C, thus laying a very strong foundation for next year’s A level results.

As the Head of School, Mr Stuart Bridge comments, “I am especially pleased to see such impressive scores, with so many students significantly surpassing their predicted grades at A level. This success is a great testament to the students’ own hard work, coupled with the enormous support given by the teaching staff at DBIS. The same students have taken part in a range of competitive sports,  dramatic productions, musical events and ensembles, community service and too many other activities to list, and yet they still make the time to succeed in their academic pursuits. I am truly delighted for one and all!”

Amongst a host of individual successes, Vanessa attained A* (Mathematics),A* (Economics) and A (Psychology). She will be going on to read Politics, Philosophy & Economics at London School of Economics (LSE). Luke gained A* (Mathematics), A* (Business Studies) A (Design Technology) and he is going on to read Economics & Finance at the University of Bristol. Other students are moving on to study degrees ranging from English to Business Management, History to Sports Science, Politics to Psychology & Criminology.

I would also like to let everyone know of the 2019-20 Secondary School Parents Handbook that can be accessed online by using the link below. This is designed to inform parents about how things run within the Secondary School.
