Green Bird Award & Year 8 Marathon Challenge

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Green Bird Award:

We have recently launched the Green Bird Award with our Year 8 students. All Year 8 students should now have chosen their focus for each of the following three sections of the award: Service (10 hours); Skills (three months in duration) and Physical Recreation (six hours of a sport). Every Wednesday during form time, my team of form tutors are monitoring each student’s progress.

The Green Bird Award is a fantastic opportunity for all students to earn the Green Bird certificate and badge by demonstrating key aspects of the DBIS Learner Profile, such as being a Committed Learner, a Mindful Leader and a Responsible Citizen (please see attached slides below).

 Year 8 Marathon Challenge:

I have set all Year 8 students a Marathon Challenge where they have the opportunity to log 42.2km over the course of Year 8 through running, walking or hiking. This is a gradual challenge where students log shorter distances over time, which will eventually result in achieving the marathon distance or beyond.

There will be monthly prizes for the top three longest distances logged, and one house point will be awarded for every 5km logged. There is even a ‘stretch’ challenge for those who would like to attempt 50km or 100km during Year 8. Every student who achieves the distance will earn a medal and certificate demonstrating aspects of being a Balanced Individual as part of the DBIS Learner Profile by advocating physical wellbeing. I have posted a Google form on the students’ tutor Google Classrooms for them to upload evidence of each run, walk or hike.

Kind regards,

Neil O’Maonaigh-Lennon
