October ‘Redress’

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

We are excited to announce that this October is going to be DBIS’ get ‘Redressed’ month. In collaboration with the environmental charity ‘Redress’ we will be educating our students about the need for sustainability in textile waste by considering the impact that we have on our environment; especially with regards to the consumption of fast fashion, encouraging re-wearing and re-purposing of clothes. There will also be opportunities for school talks from the Redress team during the month.

We are so very proud of our community’s efforts in previous years to tackle textile waste by ensuring that it does not go to landfills and donating unwanted clothes to our annual clothing drive. In previous years, we have had success stories of DBIS collecting a total of 68.05 kilograms of clothing, contributing to a whopping total of 15.4 tonnes of unwanted clothes collected during the Redress month. Whilst the volume of clothing collected throughout ‘Get Redressed Month’ is a significant achievement, the true impact is the number of people who engage with the campaign to learn about the impact that fashion has on our environment and drive a circular future for fashion.

As always, we would like to set ourselves a challenge to surpass previous years’ volume of textiles that we collected and will be offering for you to drop off unwanted clothes every day beginning the week of Monday 4th October to the 8th October.

Please drop off the clothes at the following locations:

  • Early Years campus: gate
  • Main campus: gate

There will be large Redress boxes for you to drop off your unwanted clothes with secondary students manning these. Your donation needs to meet the following criteria:

  • Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and fashion accessories.
  • Please remember to wash them first.
  • Shoes/home textiles are NOT accepted.

Additionally, Friday 8th October will be our ‘Get Redressed’ day, this is going to be a cross-phase effort with Early Years, Primary and Secondary all involved. We would love it if you could join our October ‘Get Redressed Month’ campaign to keep clothing in use for longer and change the way we consume fashion. Students and teachers should come to school dressed in clothes that have longevity; the older the piece of clothing, the better! Everyone is encouraged to have fun with this, create ensembles, mix and match, wear a parent’s piece of clothing and do so with pride.

Please help us fundraise for the Redress charity and IMPACTHK by bringing in $20 for the non-uniform day. This will then be collected by their classroom teacher/tutor.

If you have any further questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

Yours Sincerely,

Amy Lee
