Relationships and Sex Education in Year 5

Growing Up

Dear Parents,

Throughout the final two weeks of school and during our weekly Learning for Life lessons, we will be covering the topic of ‘Growing Up’. Lessons will include topics such as hygiene, how male and female bodies grow and develop & puberty, parts of the human body and changes that take place during puberty for boys and girls.
Whilst many of the lessons will be taught in the students’ regular classrooms, for some lessons students will be split into boys and girls. There will also be the opportunity for students to ask questions related to the topics covered for which we will endeavor to provide as comfortable a learning environment as possible so students feel confident when asking questions.

Should you wish to view the material that will be supporting your child’s learning prior to the lessons, please contact your child’s class teacher who will be more than happy to discuss this with you. We hope that all students participate in this important unit of learning, however if you are not comfortable with your child participating in the Growing Up Learning 4 Life unit, please discuss this with your child’s class teacher so arrangements can be made.

The lessons will be specifically related to the physical and emotional changes students should expect to go through as they grow older and we will be encouraging the students to talk through the lesson content and class discussions with parents at home.

We will be taking an enquiry based approach to the learning that is being undertaken and focussing on the development of key concepts and understandings. The focus is on developing key skills and understandings to support them as independent learners whilst embedding a deeper understanding of the concepts being taught in all aspects of their learning.

Throughout this unit students will be focussing on developing the Key Understandings of:
  1. The physical, emotional and social changes we experience
  2. How to develop and maintain a sense of wellbeing during adolescence
  3. How to develop a sense of self
Should you have any questions in regards to the enquiry process, please feel free to contact your class teacher.

Kind Regards,

The Year 5 Team
