Senior Mathematics Challenge Invite 5th October 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Promoting a love of problem-solving – Wednesday 5th October 2022

You are receiving this notification as an invitation to enter this competition.

The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice challenge aimed at Year 12 and 13 students, globally.

I believe that the Senior Mathematical Challenge is a stimulating and rewarding experience and one that our students would greatly benefit from. We encourage your son/daughter to consider undertaking the challenge.

The competition encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. It is also worth noting that any potential achievements will look favourably within student portfolios for university applications.

Scoring

Scoring rules for the Senior Mathematical Challenge are as follows:

  • All participants start with 25 points
  • 4 marks are awarded for each correct answer
  • 1 mark is deducted for each incorrect answer
  • Answers left blank will be marked as 0

Awards and follow-on rounds

To recognise the highest performers in the challenge, the UKMT awards the top-scoring 66% of participants Bronze, Silver, and Gold certificates in the ratio of 3:2:1.

In addition, there will be an invite round for 1,000 of the very highest performers to take part in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1, and around 6,000 to take part in the Senior Kangaroo.

I encourage students to utilise these previous past papers, solutions, and investigations. They are a great resource containing high-quality problems designed to encourage mathematical thinking and will suitably prepare the students for the challenge.

If you would like your child to be entered, please fill out the attached form by Tuesday 27th September. I will then register them for the competition online. The challenge will take place on Wednesday 5th October during the school day. More details will be sent later to those registered.
