Squid Game – Parent Information

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Last week Year 7 did an amazing job during our Digital Citizenship Week. Students in tutor time were able to discuss questions such as ‘How can I practice healthy media habits?’ and ‘How can I respond to digital drama?’ to name just a few. Students showed real maturity when discussing topics in class and offered insightful ideas.

Building from the work that our students did last week, we spoke with our Year 7 students about the popular Netflix series Squid Game. In line with our digital wellbeing discussions, we discussed the age rating associated with this series and explained to the students, as we regularly do, that age ratings exist for multiple reasons. A number of our Year 7 students have talked about watching Squid Game, even though it carries an age restriction of 16+.

We feel that this is an appropriate time to remind our parent community of the wonderful resource, Common Sense Media. This website provides parents with detailed reviews of popular movies, television shows and video games. Within these reviews, the website details everything parents need to know to help them make informed decisions about if the movie or game is appropriate for their child. Here is a direct LINK to what Common Sense Media have to say about Squid Game.

At DBIS, we understand that all families have different values and restrictions at home, but in line with our digital safeguarding policy, we will always do our best to keep families informed of media choices that our students are making both in and outside of school, so necessary discussions can take place to protect our students from any potential harm.

Kind regards

Karina Johnson and Angela Moriarty
