Welcome to Term 2 in Year 1

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back! We hope you and your children had a wonderful and restful break together after an action-packed Term 1 learning about habitats, extinction and changes within our natural world in our ‘Count Them While You Can… Endangered to be Extinct’ Discovery unit.

We are now embarking on Term 2, which looks set to be equally as busy and fun-filled as the last term.

In Discovery this term, the children will be addressing the question, ‘How do the needs of a community determine what structures are built?’. In line with this, in English, we will be looking at the story ‘Young Frank Architect’ and ‘What We’ll Build’ to inspire the planning, creating and evaluating our own structures. We can’t wait to show you what we produce!

For further details regarding the ‘Let’s Build Structures’ Discovery unit as well as an overview of the whole curriculum for this year, please see the Curriculum Handbook and Transition Booklet linked below:

This overview provides a summary of what your child will be learning this term.

Please ensure you continue to discuss your child’s learning with them. Much of their work is recorded within their books, in the Classroom and on Seesaw.

With regard to homework, we will be continuing with our regular system and

schedule of:

  • Weekly Common Exception Words sent home each Friday. Children are encouraged to practise their spellings using their precursive handwriting.
  • Reading each night. Children are to record the title of their book and the pages that they read in their diaries on a daily basis. Please can you, as parents, sign this too.

On Tuesday 7th May 2024 (Group 1) and Wednesday 8th May 2024 (Group 2), we will be showcasing our fantastic work created in our topic ‘How We Express Ourselves’. Where we as authors and illustrators will have learnt to express ourselves in a variety of different ways! We look forward to seeing you all there.

Please find here other Key Dates for Year 1 in Term 2.

This will be a fantastic term full of learning for Year 1. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Best wishes for 2024,

The Year 1 Team
