Welcome to Term 3 in Year 5

Welcome to Term 3 in Year 5

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We are thrilled to be able to welcome the children back onto the school campus to embark upon the final term of the academic year, face to face. The classrooms will be once again full of excitement and collaborative learning, which is the perfect start to our final term. We hope that you and your children had a wonderful and restful Easter break and are ready for an action-packed Term 3: finishing the Interstellar space unit, then spending three weeks focusing on our Growing and Changing unit before finishing with six weeks of drama and play scripts to create our own performances as part of our performance unit.

During the Growing and Changing unit, the students learn to answer questions including: What changes happen to our bodies as we reach puberty? What emotional changes or social influences might we feel? What strategies can help us feel confident, informed and healthy? To support this, in English, we will be creating posters, poetry and news reports to explain and investigate the key concepts.

During the final unit of the year, students will spend six weeks reading, performing and writing their own play scripts, ready to perform for other classes in the school. They will develop their use of non-verbal communication, spoken language and role play to engage and excite the audience. While restrictions around numbers in school mean a show in the Globe theatre is not possible, students will plan, direct and record their own performances to be shared with other classes in the school as well as with parents.

For further details regarding these Discovery Units as well as an overview of the whole curriculum for this term, please read the Term 3 Parent Overview. This overview provides a summary of what your child will be learning this term.

The Learning for Life curriculum, which focuses on promoting the health and wellbeing of our pupils, has been taught throughout the academic year. As mentioned above, during Term 3, we will be teaching the Relationships and Sexual Education (RSE) element. Specific information about this will be shared with you via Seesaw prior to the lessons taking place.

Please ensure you continue to discuss your child’s learning with them. Much of their work is recorded within their Google Drive, Classroom and on Seesaw.

With regards to homework, now we are back in school, we will be continuing with our regular system and schedule of:

  • All homework will be set on Google Classroom on a Friday, and this is to be completed by the following Friday. This consists of Maths, Discovery or English, and Spelling.
  • Reading each night. Children are to record the title of their book and the pages that they read in their diaries on a daily basis. Please can you, as parents, sign this too.
