Welcome to Year 7

Dear Parents,

We are very pleased to welcome your children to Secondary School. I’m sure this is both an exciting and nerve-racking time for all involved as your sons and daughters embark on the next stage of their educational journey. All the staff in secondary are very much looking forward to meeting the students and introducing them to the various subject specialisms and ECAs on offer.

Year 7 Form Tutors

The form tutors should be the first point of contact (via email) for any concerns or issues that arise during the course of the year. The team are very much looking forward to meeting with you all on Wednesday 28th August at the ‘Meet the Tutor Event’.

‘Work Hard, Be Nice’

This is the motto for year group as it stresses personal responsibility for academic work as well as their interactions around school with both students and staff.

Half-Term Focus

The focus for the half term ahead is to develop a year group that are both  independent and responsible‘. The emphasis will be placed on students to develop these self-management skills through effective use of their student planner, learning to manage homework and accepting consequences in a mature manner. Please regularly check your son or daughters planner and encourage then to use it effectively. In addition, from Monday 26th August students will no longer be able to call home to request someone bring in missing equipment (PE kit, musical instrument, exercise books etc), instead they must accept the consequence. We anticipate there may be a number of issues in the first few weeks as students get used to this new system and we would very much appreciate your support with this.

Homework Timetable

Year 7 will have a homework timetable which will run up until October half-term to assist with their organisational skills and meeting deadlines. This will run up until October half-term and is currently focused on the core subjects, English, Maths and Science. Students will be given a minimum of two days to complete the homework.

Monday – Maths

Tuesday – Science

Friday – English

In addition, DT and Computer Science will be each setting once piece of homework per cycle (ten days). This will be written in the student planner and visible the student google classroom.

Reading Books

Once a week during tutor time students will have a reading session in the library, therefore students are expected to have a reading book with them during the school day. Secondary students are able to borrow books from the library without parental permission. Please support your child’s progress in reading by asking questions about the books they bring home and reading alongside them for pleasure or should they require additional support.

WWW

Further information will follow upcoming weeks regarding the Week Without Walls trip.

We are looking forward to an exciting year working with your children. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s form tutor, via email, should you have any questions or concerns or would like to arrange a meeting.

Kind regards,

Morag Armstrong
