Y9 Tutor Welcome Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the new school year at Discovery Bay International School. I hope that you were able to enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable summer break.  I would like to introduce myself as your child’s tutor in Year 9 Typhoon.

This year is my second at DBIS as Head of Chinese(Whole School). Prior to moving to Hong Kong (where I studied for my Master’s Degree 9 years ago), I worked in international schools in Beijing, China and Penang, Malaysia, where I taught Mandarin and Theory of Knowledge in Secondary and also lead various Chinese teams.

Having worked across phases and taught Mandarin in various year groups of the school, I am very lucky to know a number of the students already. I feel this is advantageous, as lots of the students are familiar with myself having been taught Mandarin in Year 8. As Year 9 Typhoon tutor I’m looking forward to getting to know and supporting your child through the first year of Secondary School. To better achieve that goal, our one to one sessions are already scheduled starting next Monday. Your child will have a 10 minutes session with me in the morning every two weeks.

The House system continues to be a key part of the DBIS community and I encourage all students to get thoroughly involved in Typhoon House through House competitions and events.  Similarly, there are many school clubs (ECAs) to choose from and these offer a wonderful opportunity for all students to develop their talents or perhaps take on new challenges. Engagement in these activities creates opportunities to develop important skills like leadership, communication and collaboration, and most of all they’re lots of fun!

As your child’s tutor I will be your first point of contact should you need to get in touch with the school and Mr Justin Low as Year 9 Leader is also a point of contact for your child. You can contact me via a note in your child’s diary or via the school email. If your child needs to sign out during school time please do so via Joey, who is also the person to contact first for any absence. Any sickness in school will be informed by Nurse only.

We encourage all students to be responsible, independent and organized learners but we would like your help to ensure that your child’s attendance and punctuality are extremely high. Please check your child’s diary regularly to see homework tasks or information from teachers and please could I ask you to sign it once a week too.

I’m looking forward to meeting you and working alongside you to make your child’s Year 8 experience a very happy and memorable one.

Sincerely,

Ms Qin Cai

Year 9 Typhoon Tutor
