Year 5 Camp 2022–23

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Year 5 team would like to share some exciting news with you all: the children in Year 5 will be participating in their first overnight camp. We are highly excited by this, as it is the first time in several years that we have been able to run a camp for our students.

Accommodation

The two-night camp will take place from Tuesday 7th March 2023 to Thursday 9th March 2023 at Treasure Island, Pui O. The children will be staying in tents and will be provided with the tent and roll mat by Treasure Island. There will be a maximum of two children in a tent. Treasure Island will provide a comprehensive ‘What to Bring List’, which we will share closer to the time.

Activities

During the camp, we will be taking part in an action-packed programme of incredible activities. Part of the itinerary will include the following activities: raft building, orienteering, coasteering, visiting wetlands and buffalos, surfing and stand-up paddle boarding, a barbecue dinner and a beach movie.

Food

Children will be asked to bring a packed lunch for their first meal on the Tuesday. From that point onwards all breakfast, lunch and dinner meals will be provided for them. Children may pack some snacks to bring along to the camp too, but please ensure these are nut free as we have some students with severe nut allergies within our student body. If your child has any food allergies or restrictions that the school isn’t already aware of, please contact your child’s class teacher immediately to discuss this.

Transport arrangements

The children will arrive at school on Tuesday 7th March at the usual time (8.15am to 8.25am). We will take a coach to Treasure Island, Pui O. On Thursday 9th March, we will return to DBIS by coach. Children will be dismissed from school at the usual time of 3.10pm.

COVID-19 regulations, vaccine pass and RAT testing

As a campsite, Treasure Island is not included in the Vaccine Pass scheme, therefore there is no vaccination requirement for this visit. There is a good level of airflow within the tents to allow for plenty of fresh air to circulate around the tents. A comprehensive risk assessment has taken place, and both the accommodation and the site have been assessed as safe. The requirement for daily RAT testing still applies. We will ask the children to complete their usual Tuesday morning RAT test at home prior to the visit. They will be asked to pack two extra RAT tests, and these will be conducted with their group leader on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

In the event of a child testing positive for COVID-19 while at the campsite, parents will be informed straight away and the child will be accompanied by a member of staff back to DB to be collected by parents.

Cost

The total cost of the camp will be HK$3,300. This includes all transport, accommodation, activities, 2x breakfasts, 2x lunches and 2x dinners.

Please settle your payment on or before Monday 20th February 2023. Payment can be made in the form of a cheque or bank transfer to our HSBC A/C#111-459624-001. Thereafter, please kindly email [email protected] with your bank confirmation and student name for our records.

Parent information briefing

We will be hosting an information session for parents on Monday 13th February at 5.30pm. The meeting will be held in person in the Globe.

During the meeting, we will be sharing more information about the accommodation at the camp and the schedule of activities that the children will take part in. If there are any specific questions or areas of discussion you would like addressed in this meeting, please contact Bryony Wilson, Year Group Leader ([email protected]), ahead of the meeting so we can ensure that your questions are addressed. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

Camps have always been such an integral part of our Experiential Curriculum at DBIS as they provide children with an opportunity to gain more independence, create deeper bonds with friends, and build self-esteem and confidence as well as have a great deal of fun. We are very much looking forward to taking your child on their much-anticipated first DBIS Camp!

Kind regards,

The Year 5 Team
