Dear Year 5 families,
It has been wonderful seeing the school full of vibrant learners this week – we hope Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed coming back. Following the EDB’s agreement for school to open between 8.15am and 1.00pm, we are writing to outline Year five’s learning for the term ahead.
Discovery:
We are continuing with our Discovery unit of Interstellar for the next three weeks, looking particularly at key figures in space exploration and what they have contributed to our understanding of space. Once we have completed this unit, we will move onto our final Discovery unit, Performance. Although this will not culminate with a whole year group performance like in other years, the class will be building towards group performances that will be filmed for Seesaw.
Writing:
Along with our Discovery unit, the children will be writing a biography for their chosen space explorer which they will then turn into a podcast for their Learning Technology website. Following this, they will be writing their own narrative which they will turn into a playscript and perform with their friends.
Reading :
We will continue to read Cosmic by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, with the aim to finish the novel at the same time as the Interstellar unit. Once we start our Performance unit, we will be reading a variety of play scripts to help us with our writing.
Maths:
This term we will cover fractions, decimals and percentages, using our place value knowledge to transfer them between each other. We will move on to measures, focusing on mass, capacity and weight. We will finish the term by reviewing multiplication and division.
Afternoon activities:
As we have significantly extended the school day and all of the curriculum will be covered through face-to-face teaching, the children will be asked to complete an afternoon activity each day. This is self-directed and akin to homework. The activities will be provided via a link on the Google Classroom.

Monday 14th June – Public Holiday (Dragon Boat Festival)

Friendly Reminders:
- The school day now begins at 8.15am and finishes at 1pm.
- Children need hats and water bottles every day to be able to play.
- Children will need two snacks this term, due to the long morning.
