Year 5 & Year 6 HPV Vaccinations

Dear Parents and Guardians of Year 5 & 6 Girls,

The School Immunisation Team of the Centre of Health Protection (CHP) will visit our school on Thursday 16th May 2024 to offer the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to eligible Year 5 and 6 female students. Further information and advice regarding the vaccine can be found on the handout that has been sent home.

HPV is a group of viruses that can cause premalignant changes and malignant cancers of the cervix, vagina and anus. In Hong Kong HPV-16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58 has accounted for 90% of cases of cervical cancer. These seven genotypes are included in the 9-valent HPV vaccine offered by the immunisation team.

The first dose of HPV is offered to Year 5 female students, with the second dose of HPV being offered when they reach Year 6 the following year.

If you wish to provide consent for your child to receive the vaccine, we kindly request that you submit their original immunisation record or booklet along with the signed consent form. If you are unable to provide this, please clearly indicate this on the tick box labelled ‘I cannot submit any immunisation records of the student but still agree to the student receiving the vaccine…’.

For parents who choose to refuse the vaccine for their child, we only require a copy of the immunisation record to be submitted alongside the signed refusal.

This vaccination is a parental option. Although our health and first aid coordinators support our students, some students who are particularly fearful may feel more comfortable with an individual visit to their family doctor.

Please read the information sheet that was sent home carefully. If you have any queries please contact the Department of Health School Immunisation Team at 2615 8584 or 2615 8567 during office hours. Alternatively, you can contact the DBIS medical room at 2284 3005.

If a new consent or refusal form is required please email [email protected].

Thank you for your cooperation.

Yours sincerely,

Kate Yarnall & Jess Peeters
