Year 7 – New tutor introductions

Jack Piggott – 7 Typhoon and Drama teacher

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Drama teacher and Year 7 form tutor at DBIS.

I graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, University of London. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to work in schools and youth theatres in the UK, America, Ireland, South Africa and Hong Kong.

Studying Drama provides an exciting opportunity for students to tap into their creativity. Fortunately, all students at KS3 study Drama once per week – which is not offered by every school. Whether in-person or online, I look forward to providing these valuable experiences for the students at DBIS.

I am very much looking forward to teaching at DBIS; a school that is rooted in the community that it serves. If you see me around DB, please do feel free to say “hello”.

I look forward to meeting you all in person soon.

Best wishes,

 Jack Piggott

Shelby Smal – 7 Lightning tutor and Humanities and Business teacher

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a new Humanities and Business teacher in secondary school.

I moved to Hong Kong in 1999 at the age of 6 and attended both DBIS and West Island School, ultimately finding my way back to DBIS in 2014 as an Educational Assistant. During my time there I completed both my Juris Doctor in Law and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in 2018. Since then I have been gaining valuable experience at various schools across Hong Kong.

My goals as a teacher this year is to support, motivate and guide students into becoming organised, independent and responsible learners within the Secondary school environment, especially in these exceptional circumstances that we face. I have high expectations for my students, setting an example for them to have high expectations for themselves; to experience self-satisfaction and joy in knowing they have tried and achieved.

I am an avid reader, enjoy being active as well as trying new restaurants and cuisines that Hong Kong has to offer.

I hope your child has a wonderful year ahead.

Looking forward to meeting you all soon

Shelby Smal

Chris Butler – 7 Storm and Computer Science teacher

I am chuffed to be bits to be the new Teacher of Computer Science at DBIS.

I was born and educated in Great Britain.  Later on I moved to The Netherlands where I worked for a Taiwanese electronics company.  Most recently I was based in Abu Dhabi teaching secondary Computing & IT.

At the heart of my work for the last twenty years has been the desire to encourage and instill confident independent application when using IT systems.  As well as being motivated to teach the more traditional Computing topics of Multimedia Design and Desktop Applications, my fascination with technology is spurred on by teaching Cyber Security, Web Programming, and the Internet of Things.

I like to travel to new places, to experience new things, and to try to understand both past and present civilisations and cultures. With the cooler months fast approaching, I am looking forward to exploring the many different territories of Hong Kong.

The welcome shown to me so far has been extremely heartwarming and I look forward to meeting with as many of you as possible in the coming months.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Chris Butler

Louise Tyrrell – 7 Thunder and English teacher

I am delighted to introduce myself to you as an English teacher and Year 7 tutor.  Having previously taught at DBIS, I am excited to return to the Discovery Bay community and to meet the students, although unfortunately not in person for the time being!

I moved to Hong Kong from the UK fourteen years ago and I have taught in a number of international schools here.  I recently returned to the UK for three years where I was first Head of Sixth Form and latterly the residential Housemistress of a thriving girls’ day and boarding house.  However, Hong Kong is my family’s real home and we returned at the end of last year.  I am passionate about pastoral care and look forward to bringing my experience to the Year 7 team.  I am excited to join DBIS as a Year 7 tutor, enabling me to begin their Secondary school journey with them and guide them in the transition from Primary school and to work with them in developing their skills of independence, organisation and resilience.

I hope to instill my love of English and especially reading in my students and encourage them to be lifelong readers and confident communicators.

I look forward to meeting with you soon and wish your child a wonderful start to their time here at DBIS.

Best wishes,

Louise Tyrrell
