Ms. Lara Scrimgeour Year 8 Lightning
Dear Parent/Guardian,Â
Welcome to the new school year at Discovery Bay International School. I hope that you were able to enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable summer break despite the current challenges. I would like to introduce myself as your child’s tutor in Year 8 Lightning.
This year is my first at DBIS. I will be teaching both Geography and Humanities. Prior to moving to Hong Kong, I worked in Dulwich International High School, Suzhou for four years as a Geography specialist and as a Head of Year. Before living and working in China I taught for ten years at a New Zealand school both as a Geography specialist and in other humanities subjects and also was a Head of Year for five years.Â
As Year 8 Lightening tutor I’m looking forward to getting to know and supporting your child through the year. To better achieve that goal, our one to one sessions are already scheduled starting next Monday, 24th August. Your child will have a 10 minutes session with me in the morning every two weeks.Â
As your child’s tutor I will be your first point of contact should you need to get in touch with the school and Mrs Tracey Smal as Year 8 Leader is also a point of contact for your child. You can contact me via the school email.
I’m looking forward to meeting you and working alongside you to make your child’s Year 8 experience a very happy and memorable one.
Â
Sincerely,
Ms. Lara Scrimgeour
Year 8 Lightning Tutor
Ms. Myra Mi Year 8 Thunder

My goal this year is to support our students to become confident, organized and independent learners. I am looking forward to teaching your children and building strong relationships with them, supporting their flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

Mr. Justin Low Year 8 Storm
Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome your children to our Year 8 Storm tutor group! I look forward to both supporting your children at school and working closely with you as parents through my role as a tutor.
My name is Justin Low and I have been at DBIS for the past 7 years and have worked in various roles since being here. This year, as well as being a Year 8 tutor, I will be taking on the role as Head of Outdoor and Experiential Learning and will be teaching mathematics and science.
Prior to moving to Hong Kong 7 years ago, I was located in Kent in the South East of England where I grew up and then later embarked upon my teaching career. I studied an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering in London before completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Canterbury Christchurch University back in Kent. More recently, I have completed a Master’s degree locally here at the University of Hong Kong. I taught for 8 years in two schools in the town of Tunbridge Wells before moving out to Hong Kong in 2013.
As well as the subjects I teach, I also have a passion for learning beyond the classroom. Over the years I have had the pleasure of taking students away from the classroom for a variety of experiences including university visits, residential trips ranging from the panda base in Chengdu to the WW1 battlefields of Northern France; and in coordinating many action, adventure, and enrichment programmes locally and overseas. In the UK I was also a civilian instructor for the RAF Air Cadet organisation specialising in outdoor adventure training and teaching aerospace studies. I was also a coordinator for the Duke of Edinburgh’s award programme within Kent schools.   Â
Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, fitness and the outdoors. I have a passion for travel, culture and food – in fact, I grew up in a family catering business and have over 10 years of experience in working as a chef!
That was a brief introduction about myself – I am now looking forward to finding out about your children and look forward to meeting you as parents, in person, in the near future!Â
Kind regards,
Justin Low
