I am very pleased to announce that The Education Bureau (EDB) has approved our Class Resumption Plan and we can begin to resume classes as of Wednesday 16th September, 2020. The COVID-19 outbreak has meant our school community has had to spend an extended period apart and we have had a unique beginning to our school year. We are all incredibly thankful that our school community can come back together and move forward collectively.

Update on the suspension to in school lessons for secondary students on the back of the Education Bureau guidelines.
Year 7 to 10 students will have online learning for the first week of the new term. We are working on the assumption that they will return to school from Monday 11th January.
Students in Years 11 – 13 will return to school on Monday 4th January for their lessons before lunch in accordance with the Education Bureau guidance.

We hope you are continuing to keep safe and well during this challenging time. As we begin our third week of imposed class suspensions, I would like to offer some insights, feedback and next steps in our programme of online learning.
We are proud to be offering the Junior Duke Award, an optional award to the Year 3-6 students of DBIS for 2020/21.

After a spectacular program of classical, jazz and rock music in October, we are delighted to announce another live event coming in November. All students with a love of music are welcome to sign up to perform live!

The creative arts department is happy to announce the return of the DBIS Live! The concert will be performed by our talented DBIS students, online. Members of our Peripatetic Faculty have been sharing their considerable gifts by performing in Primary and Secondary assemblies throughout the term and at Carols on the Pitch. The response from the children has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic with many expressing an interest in learning an instrument. We currently have teachers of clarinet, flute, saxophone, piano, strings, brass (including a trombone specialist from the HK Philharmonic), guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, voice and drums.

Next week the EY1 children will be beginning Play Projects. Play Projects is an approach to the curriculum created by Greg Bottrill, author of “Can I Go And Play Now” which allows each child to lead their own learning by creating their own play project. Each play project needs a passcode or a magic word and the children choose them depending on their learning. For further information on Play Projects please click on the link here.

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling (https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/).

We’d like to invite the EY1 children to the Performance of ‘The Snail and the Whale’. The performance is on Friday 7th February at 12pm at the Hong Academy for Performing Arts. The children are to arrive at school at normal time and buses will depart school at 10am. The viewing of this performance is a great opportunity for the students to see a narrative on stage.

Bassist Steve Whipple (Lady Gaga) is also one of many now embracing online instrumental lessons. I am delighted to see so many students have kept going with learning their instrument during these unpredictable times and am delighted to announce that instrumental lessons will continue online.
I am pleased to announce that there will be 11 lessons in term 2 which commences on Monday 4 January, with the final lesson for term 2 being on Friday 26 March 2021.

As a part of our ‘Sharing the Planet’ enquiry unit, the children will be exploring where they live in the world. To support our learning about our community, the Nursery classes will be going on a bus journey with their class friends around Discovery Bay. On the journey, the children will have the opportunity to show their friends where they live and special places around Discovery Bay. The bus journey will be around thirty minutes and we aim to pass by as many of the children’s homes as possible.

As announced over the weekend in the press and confirmed by the Education Bureau, in-class lessons for schools will be suspended with effect from Wednesday 2nd December. We will therefore be reverting to online learning for Years 4 to 11 on Wednesday for the remainder of the school term. Similarly, our Early Years and Year 3 classes will continue with online learning until 11 December and will not return to school as previously planned.
There are mock examinations currently underway for Years 12 and 13 and these will be allowed to run as planned on campus this week.

We have been running our electronic sign-in system, InVentry, for staff for several months and our sixth form students have been signing in and out of the Sixth Form campus with their students cards since they have returned to school.
