DBIS Home Learning Update

Dear DBIS Families,

We hope you are continuing to keep safe and well during this challenging time. As we begin our third week of imposed class suspensions, I would like to offer some insights, feedback and next steps in our programme of online learning.

DBIS Live- High Tea Soiree Series

DBIS Music School (Instrumental Lessons) – Term 2

Members of our Peripatetic Faculty have been sharing their considerable gifts by performing in Primary and Secondary assemblies throughout the term and at Carols on the Pitch. The response from the children has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic with many expressing an interest in learning an instrument.  We currently have teachers of clarinet, flute, saxophone, piano, strings, brass (including a trombone specialist from the HK Philharmonic), guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, voice  and drums.

EY1 Junk Modelling

EY1 Magic Words Program

In EY1 we follow a high frequency word programme called ‘Magic 100 Words’.  There are 100 frequently occurring words in the English language that make up, on average, half of the words found in reading and writing.  The Magic 100 Words literacy activities and games promote instant recognition of these words. Mastering half the words used in reading and writing makes the task of reading and writing ‘magically’ easier.

We’d like to invite the EY1 children to the Performance of ‘The Snail and the Whale’. The performance is on Friday 7th February at 12pm at the Hong Academy for Performing Arts. The children are to arrive at school at normal time and buses will depart school at 10am. The viewing of this performance is a great opportunity for the students to see a narrative on stage.

Inter House Carols Competition, Own Clothes Day and Hot Chocolates – Friday 13th December

As always the last lesson on Friday is suspended to allow for our Interhouse Carol Singing Competition and Hot Chocolates.  Our brilliant PTSA will supply the Hot Chocolate while our students provide the cheer with their wonderful renditions of Christmas Hits. Nursery Community Bus Trip

Dear Parents,

As a part of our ‘Sharing the Planet’ enquiry unit, the children will be exploring where they live in the world. To support our learning about our community, the Nursery classes will be going on a bus journey with their class friends around Discovery Bay. On the journey, the children will have the opportunity to show their friends where they live and special places around Discovery Bay. The bus journey will be around thirty minutes and we aim to pass by as many of the children’s homes as possible.

You are invited to join us for a Funky Fingers Stay and Play session in your child’s classroom during the week commencing 17th February 2020. This will give you the opportunity to experience how we support the children’s development of gross and fine motor skills to gain strength and confidence in using their body.

I’m very pleased to announce we will be hosting the annual Remembrance Day Service at the DBIS flag pole on Monday 11 November at 07:15. All staff are invited to attend along with the wider DB community.

The service will include words from Mr. Stuart Bridge, Mr. Dominic Hill and Squadron Leader (Retired) David Lohse. We will also have musical performances from DBIS musicians.

As part of the DBIS Sustainability Week learning celebrations, we are pleased to announce the #TRASHTAG photo competition. We would love to see the children, mums, dads, and families making an environmental difference – however large or small –  by taking a before and after shot of an area that you’ve tidied up. Your area to clean can be anywhere from the beach, park, pathway, hiking trail, or even outside your front door.

It is with regret, and a certain irony, that due to the very high pollution levels we have to cancel the walking school bus this morning. Swim Team training is also cancelled this morning. U20 football will take place in the Gym.

We need your Plastic Bags!

The school will be collecting Plastic Bags every morning between the 23rd and 27th September by the main entrance. These will be used by the students to create Kindness Mats for the homeless in order to help support Impact HK and the fantastic work they do.   Thank you for your support
