We are excited to announce that our school is introducing Wellio, a new digital platform, as the foundation for our ‘Learning for Life’ lessons. This new program will serve as our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) curriculum for students in Years 7 to 13.
Wellio is designed to proactively improve student wellbeing with a modern, engaging, and data-driven approach. It offers a comprehensive library of lessons that are both current and relevant to the challenges young people face today. The platform utilises snippets from the media and popular culture to engage, educate and further explore these themes. This platform will help us create a tailored curriculum that addresses the specific needs of our student body.
Key Benefits of the Wellio Platform
Wellio’s digital format will significantly enhance how we deliver our ‘Learning for Life’ lessons. Here are some of the key features we’re looking forward to:
- Engaging Lessons: The platform includes features like live polls, quizzes, and live progress monitoring to keep students engaged and make lessons more dynamic.
- Targeted Support: The program provides us with valuable data and insights, allowing us to identify and address specific wellbeing issues across different classes and year levels. This means we can quickly adapt the curriculum to meet emerging needs.
- Consistent Delivery: Wellio ensures that all students receive the same high standard of instruction, regardless of who is leading the lesson.
Here are the key themes covered in the Wellio PSHE curriculum:
Health and Wellbeing
This theme focuses on physical, mental, and emotional health. It includes topics like healthy lifestyles, diet, exercise, emotional regulation, and strategies for managing stress and anxiety. The curriculum also addresses personal hygiene and the importance of sleep.
Relationships and Social Skills
This section teaches students how to build and maintain positive relationships with family, friends, and others. It covers communication skills, empathy, teamwork, and understanding different types of relationships. The curriculum also addresses respecting diversity and resolving conflicts peacefully.
Living in the Wider World
This theme prepares students to be responsible and active citizens. It covers topics such as understanding money and personal finance, career paths, and the role of work. It also includes civic responsibility, understanding the law, and contributing to the community. This theme helps students grasp their rights and responsibilities as members of society.
Online Safety and Digital Literacy
This theme addresses the challenges and opportunities of the digital world. It focuses on safe use of the internet, social media, and other technologies. Topics include recognizing and reporting cyberbullying, protecting personal information online, and understanding the concept of digital footprint. It also promotes responsible and ethical online behavior.
Identity and Self-Esteem
This theme helps students develop a positive sense of self. It covers understanding personal identity, recognizing strengths and weaknesses, and building self-confidence. The curriculum encourages students to celebrate their individuality and respect the identities of others.
Relationships and Sex EducationÂ
The Wellio curriculum’s Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) element is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need for healthy, safe, and positive relationships. The RSE curriculum is often integrated into the broader PSHE framework and is taught in an age-appropriate and sensitive manner.
- Relationships: This theme covers all kinds of relationships, including friendships, family relationships, and intimate or romantic relationships. It focuses on the qualities of a healthy relationship, such as respect, trust, and communication, and also teaches students how to recognize and manage unhealthy or risky relationships. The curriculum is inclusive and acknowledges the diversity of family structures.
- Physical and Emotional Changes: This element prepares students for puberty and the physical and emotional changes that happen as they grow up. It provides factual, scientific information about the human body, development, and hygiene. Topics include menstruation, male and female anatomy, and the emotional shifts that come with adolescence.
- Online Relationships and Safety: With the increasing use of technology, this is a crucial part of the RSE curriculum. It teaches students how to navigate online relationships safely, recognise and report cyberbullying, and understand the concept of digital consent. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of protecting personal information and being a responsible digital citizen.
- Diversity and Respect: A core component of the RSE curriculum is promoting respect for diversity in all its forms, including different identities, cultures, and sexual orientations. It aims to create an inclusive environment where students feel safe and respected, and where they can challenge stereotypes and prejudice.
- Consent and Boundaries: This theme is fundamental to all relationships. It teaches students the importance of giving and receiving consent in various contexts and understanding personal boundaries. This is taught in an age-appropriate way to empower students to feel confident in their own bodies and to respect the bodily integrity of others.
Please note: Further information on Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) components of the curriculum will be shared with you in advance of these areas of learning being explored with students.Â
