Chess Tournament – Sunday 1st March 2026

Dear Parents / Guardians,

A number of our students have shown interest in participating in the 4th Dr Lister Cup – a scholastic chess tournament at Malvern College – on Sunday 1st March 2026.

As leader of the DBIS Secondary Chess Club, I would very much encourage all interested Secondary and Year 6 students to attend and participate in the tournament. There is no minimum standard beyond having a knowledge of the rules of chess, and we hope that experience in this tournament will serve to grow our beginner students’ appreciation and understanding of the game. For our more experienced or serious players, there are prizes for the top six players in each age category, as well as team prizes for the winning school.

This tournament will require a commitment to playing seven games on Sunday 1st March, commencing at 9am. The tournament will conclude before 4pm, with the prize-giving ceremony at 4.30pm.

Attendance & Supervision

As this is a scholastic competition, students are required to wear their full school uniform for the event.

I am delighted to share that I will be present throughout the tournament to support, advise and encourage our students. However, please note the following regarding supervision:

Important Notice: While I will be onsite to provide mentorship and celebrate our students’ efforts, I will not be acting in loco parentis. Primary responsibility for your child remains with the parents/guardians for the duration of the event. Please ensure a designated adult is present or available as required by the tournament organisers.

I look forward to seeing our players in action and, hopefully, celebrating some fantastic victories together!

Kind regards,

Mr Andy Buddery
