American Mathematics Competition November 2021

American Mathematics Competition

November 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The American Mathematics Competitions are a series of examinations and curriculum materials designed to strengthen problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge in Middle and High School (Secondary) students. Under the agreement with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the 23rd annual AMC10 and 73rd annual AMC 12 will be offered at DBIS in November 2021.

I am writing to you to invite those students with an interest in Mathematics, analytical thinking and furthering their careers in mathematics to take part in these competitions. The exams will be held in school, and will be monitored by teachers.

These are the details:

*Please note that the AMC 10A and 12A will be held at the same time, and students can attend only one of the two competitions.

*The same rule applies to the AMC 10B and 12B.

Both the A and B versions have the same number of questions and are at the same level of difficulty. Students have the option to attend one of the A and one of the B.

After the competition results are compiled, certificates will be presented to the student with the highest score in each school and to nationally high-scoring students. The real rewards come from exposing and challenging each student to mathematics that is new and different.

The measure of success of the competition is not the number of problems solved, but is the level of engagement with mathematics that arises from the intellectual challenge of the problem-solving process.

More about the competition:

The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade (Y11) and below, and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. Students in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 10. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. Students in grade 12 (Y13) or below and under 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 12. The AMC will eventually lead to the International Mathematics Olympiad.

To get a ‘feel’ for the kind of questions, refer to the attached pdf accompanying this.

If you are interested in your child registering for this competition, kindly make a cash payment at our secondary reception to Ms Joey Lee by 28th October (next Thursday). Joey will need to know if your child wishes to take the 10A/12A, or the 10B/12B, or one of each.
