An August to remember in the Secondary School

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

Since my last bulletin message there have many successes for our DBIS students and I would like to take the opportunity to talk to you about a few of them.

House Captains

One particular success has been the election of our new House Captains for 2019-20. On Monday the 26th of August over 25% of the students in Year 11 stood to be elected for the House Captain of their particular House, which shows a very clear indication of the engagement of students with taking on leadership responsibilities. Many of my colleagues have spoken to me to praise each of the students who took part for their efforts in speaking to so many of their peers and also about the quality of the speeches they made. This made it very challenging for our students to choose their own House Captains for 2019-20. Every single one of those who put themselves forwards for these roles should be proud of themselves, and each received a letter from myself and a certificate. The four successful candidates were:

  • Grace Broadbent – Thunder
  • Brett Bothma – Lightning
  • Tahlea Sutherland – Storm
  • Tari Paul – Typhoon
Please congratulate them and all of their fellow Year 11 students who stood for this prestigious role within the school.
Exam successes

It was also very pleasing to be able to share the excitement of the students when they received their IGCSE results last week. I would like to congratulate them all on their successes and for the effort they have put in to achieve their results. Many of our students achieved top grades and they have placed themselves in a good position to be successful this academic year.

Year 7-9 PTSA Disco
I was very pleased to be able to attend my first ever DBIS Secondary disco on Friday evening. This was a fantastic event that was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the students who came along. I know that there were some disappointed students who turned up on the evening and were not able to attend as the tickets needed to be purchased in advance, so for next year I strongly encourage every Year 7-9 student to purchase their tickets as early as they can. This was yet another example where I have seen, during my short amount of time within this school, how the PTSA members support our school in such a positive way. I would like to thank every single one of them for their time and effort to ensure such a fantastic time was had by everyone.
Parent Information meetings
I was really pleased by the efforts of my colleagues on the many events last week as well as the notable numbers of parents who attended these and actively engaged with each of these sessions. I hope that this supports future communication between the school and our parent body to ensure that parents are fully informed and feel confident in communicating with us.

Kind regards,

Mr. Simon Oakley
