EY1 Magic Words Program

Magic 100 Words Parent Information Letter

Dear Parents and Carers,

In EY1 we follow a high frequency word programme called ‘Magic 100 Words’.  There are 100 frequently occurring words in the English language that make up, on average, half of the words found in reading and writing.  The Magic 100 Words literacy activities and games promote instant recognition of these words. Mastering half the words used in reading and writing makes the task of reading and writing ‘magically’ easier.

On Monday 3rd February (after Chinese New Year) you will find in your child’s reading folder the Magic 100 words sheet as well as suggested activities as to how you can support your child.  You will see a ‘star’ which will indicate which set of words your child is currently working on.

Please encourage your child to read these words at home each night.  Ask your child to read the words in and out of order and try to master them without using ‘Fred talk’ (sounding out). Each week your child will be assessed by either the class Educational Assistant or Teacher. When the words your child is working on have been read fluently by your child they will be awarded a sticker.

If you have any questions or queries about the Magic 100 Words programme please do not hesitate to ask your class teacher.

Kind regards,

The EY1 Team
