EY1 Reading

Dear EY1 Families,

Starting in Week 6, the children will receive two reading books each week. The books will come home on a Monday and we ask that the children return them to school on Friday.

We ask that the children read these books aloud to an adult throughout the week and that adults ask comprehension questions about the book; asking children to make basic inferences about what has happened in the story and relate it to their own experiences, where possible.

The reading books will be at a level appropriate for each child based on their teachers observations. We aim to foster a love of reading in EY1 and wish for the children to feel confident when reading aloud.

We have included some ideas below to help support your child at home with this process:

Before Reading you may support your child by:

  • Reading the title to your child if necessary
  • Doing a “picture walk” if your child has never read the book. This will give them the opportunity to look at the pictures and talk about the story before reading
  • Reading the first page to your child to get them started if necessary

During reading you may encourage your child to:

  • Quickly look at the picture and think about the story before they read the page
  • Point under each word as they read
  • If your child reads the page incorrectly, reread the page for them as you point to each word. Ask them to read it again

After Reading you may wish to:

  • Talk about the story after reading the book
  • Locate a few basic sight words after reading the story (a, the, like, can, etc.) by saying, “Point to the word______.

A Helpful Hint:

  • 10 minutes of reading is a guideline, your child may choose to read for a longer period of time or they may want to listen to you read a book to them.

Please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher should you have any questions or concerns.

Many thanks,

The EY1 Team
