FS-2 Home Reading Books

Dear FS-2 Families,

Next week, FS-2 children will begin to take home a sound and reading book.

All children will begin with a wordless picture book. Wordless picture books are great for encouraging a child’s ability to infer what is happening in a story. With no words for guidance or distraction, they have to figure this out, using only the illustrations and their imagination. This not only develops comprehension but also deepens their overall understanding of story structure and plot, develops their communication skills and broadens their vocabulary.

Your child will also bring home a sound booklet with some of the letter sounds taught to date. Please encourage your child to practise these sounds regularly as confidence in recognising these speedily will help with their reading and writing skills. As the children learn more sounds, we will send out additional sound books throughout the year. Class teachers will post a video to Seesaw next week to demonstrate how you can support practising sounds at home.

You will also receive a Home/School Link Book alongside these books. This book has detailed information on how the home reading programme will run and gives you helpful tips on supporting your child with reading. You can also use this book to record your child’s reading at home.

If you haven’t already done so, please send in an A4 or A3 zip folder (please note this is in addition to the library folder) for your child to take their books home. Class teachers will communicate the day these need to be returned to school each week.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your class teacher. We are here to support you and your child every step of the way.

Kind regards,
The FS-2  Team
