Head of Performance and Creative Arts: Welcome Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year at Discovery Bay International School.  I hope that your family has had an exciting and enjoyable summer break with many opportunities for rest and relaxation together.  I am delighted to introduce myself as the Head of Performance and Creative Arts.

My earliest childhood memory is when I was 3 years old listening to music with subwoofer headphones, and it was from that moment that a genuine love and passion for music started. I began teaching piano at the tender age of 16 and started work as a touring musician at the age of 18. Soon after I completed an Honours Degree with a focus on Classical Music, and then a Masters Degree with a Jazz specialism, whilst also maintaining a hectic touring schedule. During this time I was also contracted to write jingles for a radio station and some years later, whilst teaching in Malaysia, I was fortunate to be part of a band that released a single that achieved number 6 in the charts, and was subsequently nominated for 3 Sony music awards. This experience is key to my approach to teaching music, as relevant industry skills are delivered through high impact, engaging lessons.

My teacher training was completed in Cumbria, England, and my career includes roles such as Head of House, Head of Music, Director of Music, Head of Creative Arts, Head of Performing Arts, and Whole School Teaching and Learning Coach, predominantly in Malaysia where I lived for over a decade. Given my background as a performer, I enjoy lively music lessons and have the absolute belief that all students are uniquely talented.  I also enjoy composing music through a range of digital platforms which is a key part of my teaching philosophy. Discovery Bay International School has an incredibly dedicated team of music, art and drama teachers who offer exceptional opportunities through extra clubs and provisions and I am honoured to lead such an impressive team. Our peripatetic music lessons are of the highest quality and provide an amazing opportunity to learn an instrument from an outstanding teacher. I do hope students will take full advantage of this and immerse themselves in the amazing world of Creative Arts.

Finally, I have the firm belief that Community Music making makes communities happier. Parents are encouraged to join our Community Choir and if you happen to play an instrument please let me know.

I look forward to meeting you all in person.

Sincerely,

David Spencer
