Home Readers in EY1 & 2

Dear EY1 & EY2 Families,

To support your child with their reading at home, they will be receiving a ‘Reading Strategies Bookmark’ in Week 1 of Term 2. This bookmark is to be used when your child reads at home to prompt them to use a range of strategies which will develop confidence and fluency when reading aloud. We will be introducing the children to these strategies in Term 2 during our reading sessions.

The strategies are shown below:

Alongside this bookmark, you may notice that the children will no longer have a book “level” but instead, a colour. This is a new reading system that we have implemented at DBIS so you may notice some minor changes in the books your child receives. As always the children will bring home a book at a high confidence level, this is so they can ‘show off’ their reading and consolidate reading strategies they have been taught. They will be selecting their own books from a variety of authors and publishers to ensure they are developing a love for reading and beginning to appreciate books for enjoyment and learning.

After the children have self-selected their books they can return them on their normal reading days. They will be responsible for checking these books out of their class library.  As the children select books they may wish to re-read a book or have the book for longer than usual, this is fine and they can discuss this with their class teacher. We really want to encourage independence and ownership over their readers.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or Ms Coote.

Kind Regards,

The EY1 & EY2 Teams
