Learning about ‘Our Hong Kong’ in Year 5

On Monday 7th November we will begin our new unit of learning, ‘Our Hong Kong’, which will last until the Chinese New Year half-term holiday.

In this unit, Year 5 students will explore how the landscape of Hong Kong has changed and developed over time. We will be creating maps, designing new skyscrapers and learning all about the water cycle and weather systems. The students will follow their own inquiries, summarise and present their ideas. They will be detectives, explorers, artists, designers and collaborators, all focused on ‘Our Hong Kong’. We are excited to be venturing into central Hong Kong to sketch the skyline and take in the sights on a walking tour, before taking this experiential learning back into the classroom to enhance our understanding of this vibrant city.

In English this term, we will be immersing ourselves in what life may have been like in the Walled City of Kowloon and writing a first-person narrative. We will also create our own travel guides to Hong Kong, writing about all the amazing sights the city has to offer. This will further develop the student’s knowledge of their local area as they write a descriptive and thoroughly researched guide.

We are excited for the students to share their learning with you at the end of this unit, on Thursday 19th January, and for them to take you on a tour of ‘Our Hong Kong’!

Best wishes,
The Year 5 Team
