Parent Read-Alouds During Book Week – Promoting Multilingual Learners’ Languages and Cultures

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Read to Connect: Building Community Through Stories’.

One of the wonderful things about our school is the diversity of languages and cultures that make up our school community, and what better way to build community than through stories. Given that the majority of our curriculum is delivered in English, and our students are exposed to a huge number of English-language stories in the course of a school year, we would like to enrich their exposure to other languages.

As such, we are seeking bi- and multilingual parents with a love of books and reading to support a lunchtime activity in which parents read a favourite picture book written in their home language (even better if the author is from your home country). Ideally, you would read the story aloud in your home language and then share the book a second time in English.

If you are interested in signing up for a lunchtime slot, please complete the Google form HERE

While we will do our best to accommodate all parents who sign up, we are limited by space. Depending on the level of interest, it may be that we won’t be able to find a slot for everyone but will inform you either way prior to the term break. It might be that we can host a similar event in the future.

Details

  • This event will be run daily, Tuesday 22nd April to Friday 25th April, in the library (main campus) during Primary lunchtime, 12.25pm to 12.55pm.
  • We would ask that selected parents arrive no later than 12.15pm and depart the campus at the end of lunchtime.
  • Library staff will pre-register parents coming onto campus. Only those pre-registered will be able to access the library for this event.
  • We request that parents select a picture book to read to students. Illustrations offer a wonderful means of visual access to a story when a child is unfamiliar with the spoken and written language.
  • Sign-up will close Monday 31st March.
