Reading in Year 2

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Please can all children bring their reading folder into school every day. In their folders, they should have their book band reading book and their Year 1–2 diary. On Fridays, please send spelling books in the home reading folders as well.

We encourage all children to read at least four times a week at home; this can be done during the week and/or at weekends.

Please make sure that all reading is recorded in the diary. Please mark down how long each reading session lasts, as every 15 minutes of reading equals one iRead point. We will add together all of the time spent reading and change this into iRead points. There is no need to do anything at home.

For early readers, it can be beneficial to read each text through twice, so that they can become familiar with vocabulary and deepen their understanding of what they have read. Once a book is finished, please write ‘finished’ in the diary so that we know when to change the books.

In addition to the children’s reading folder, please can they bring in an A3 library folder. This only needs to come into school on library days.

Library days;

Pangolins – Tuesdays

Kakapos – Mondays

White Rhino – Mondays

Pandas – Fridays

Any questions about reading and how to record your child’s reading, please ask your child’s class teacher.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Year 2 Team
