STEAM Week at DBIS

Dear Parents

We are very excited to inform you that in the week beginning 6th January, we will host our 2nd annual DBIS STEAM Week. This will be a whole school event where students across all three phases of the school will have an opportunity to carry out a range of exciting challenges that will develop their critical thinking, creative problem solving and collaboration skills. One of the aims of this week is to raise the profile of the STEAM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths and to give the students an insight into future careers in these fields.

We are very excited to announce that the theme of this year’s STEAM Week is the Olympic Games with a focus on the famous motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’ (faster, higher, stronger). While the theme of the week is now out in the open, the actual STEAM challenges will not be revealed until the launch to the students and teachers at the start of the week itself.

Throughout the week there will be some additional lunchtime events with opportunities for the students to compete for some fantastic STEAM themed prizes. These events will be promoted within the week.

On Thursday 9th January, we will be holding a STEAM Showcase Extravaganza. This event was inspired by an idea suggested by Year 5 student, Julia. On this day we encourage students to bring in something from home that they would love to show off to the rest of the school. It may be a robot that they have programmed themselves or a STEAM project that they have worked on at home. The showcase will take place during Primary and Secondary lunchtimes in the globe and is open to all year groups.

On Saturday 11th January, we will be hosting our first ever family STEAM event. We would like to encourage our DBIS families to sign up to come and be a part of this hugely exciting opportunity to collaborate, communicate and create together. During this morning event, family teams will be set a challenge and will work together to compete against other families to create something wonderful. While we welcome families of all sizes, we will need to request that each family has a minimum of 1 parent or grandparent and one child to enter. The key aims of this event are for each family to have fun, be challenged and feel a sense of pride when they work together to accomplish something amazing. There will even be some prizes up for grabs! If you would like to sign up to this event, please complete this form. Places will be limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

We look forward to sharing lots of photos and updates with you throughout the week through our various Twitter feeds. In the meantime, here is a video that has been shared with some of our students today to officially launch the theme.

Kind regards

The STEAM Week Team
