Swimming EPA & Squad Training 2021-22

Dear Parents,

I hope you are well and have had a restful summer break. This letter is for all students who are interested in being part of the DBIS Swimming Team for 2021-22. As you are aware, due to Covid-19 restrictions the school swimming pool has been closed for sometime.

The PE team is excited that we are now able to reopen the school swimming pool and reform our DBIS swimming team! If your child is in Year 4 or above and he or she is interested in joining the DBIS swimming team, please can I ask you to sign up via CHQ when EPA sign up opens. More information on EPA sign up will be posted on the hub next week. Please can I ask you to fully read the trial requirements at the bottom of this letter before signing up.

Please note that if your child has been part of the DBIS swimming team in the past and would like to continue their training, I would still like them to register again so that they can be invited to one of the trial days.

Once the PE department knows how many students have signed up, each student will then be assigned a trial date by the PE department. Students must register via CHQ to qualify for an invitation to a trial date.

Trial dates will commence the week beginning 6th September 2021.

Primary (Year 4 – 6) on Tuesday mornings – 7:10am – 8:10am.

Secondary (Year 7 – 13) on Thursday mornings – 7:10am – 8:00am.

If selected for the swim team, students will be notified by invitation to begin training at the above times. If any students are unsuccessful, they will be notified and given reasons why and how to develop further, so that they can take advantage of team trials in the future.

Lastly, please see the suggested requirements to qualify for Swim team training. Students should be able to swim the three main competitive strokes (Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke) with good technique, at pace and have experience and some confidence when diving and performing competitive starts and turns.

To be completed after the warm up:

  1. Complete a set lasting 200 metres (4 x 50m / 8 x 25m) on a specific turnaround time, based on age and agreed upon by the teacher or coach with a focus on stroke technique and consistency.
  2. Swim 250 metres continuously using multiple strokes with a focus on stroke technique and consistency.
  3. Other requirements our assessors will look for on the day will include:
    • Overall swimming competence
    • Stroke technique and efficiency
    • Diving confidence
    • Starts and Turns

Thank you kindly for taking the time to read all of this information.

If you have any further enquiries or if any of the above information is not clear, please do not hesitate to contact me or email [email protected].

Kind regards,

Mr. Leo Van den Bogaerde
