Welcome to Term 2 in Year 1

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope you and your children had a wonderful and restful break together after an action-packed Term 1 learning about ‘Our Class is a Family’ and ‘Endangered to Extinct’.

We are now embarking on Term 2, which looks set to be equally as busy and fun-filled as the last term. In Discovery this term, our new exciting units are:  ‘Let’s Build Structures!’ AND ‘Cartography: Our World on Paper’. The children will begin this term by addressing the question, ’Do structures differ depending on where they are around the world?’ In line with this, in English, we will be reading ‘Young Frank Architect’ and using our own creative resources to guide instruction writing.

Please continue to discuss your child’s learning with them. Much of their work is recorded within their Seesaw.

With regard to homework, we will be continuing with our regular system and schedule of:

  • Reading each night. Children are to record the title of their book and the pages that they read in their diaries on a daily basis. Making any key notes, celebrations or difficulties in their reading diary.
  • Weekly spelling sent home every Monday, revising spelling rules, patterns and common exception words which are explicitly taught in school. Books to be returned each Friday.

Please find the Year 1 Term 2 Key Dates linked HERE.

For more information regarding Year 1 for the academic year 2025-26, please refer to the linked Welcome to Year 1 booklet and the Key Stage 1 (Year 1 & 2) Curriculum Handbook, which can also be located on the Hub.

We look forward to welcoming you back to school very soon.

Best wishes,

The Year 1 Team
