Welcome to Term 3 in Year 1

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back! We hope you and your children had a wonderful and restful break together after an action-packed Term 2 learning about ‘Let’s Build Structures’ and ‘Cartography: Our World on Paper’.

We are now embarking on Term 3, which looks set to be equally as busy and fun filled as the last term.

In Discovery this term, the children will begin their new exciting units: ‘How We Express Ourselves’ and ‘Our Bodies are Brilliant’. In line with this, in English, we will be exploring the significant author Roald Dahl and stepping into the shoes of the illustrator Quentin Blake. In our final unit, we will be reading a range of fiction and non-fiction books to help us understand our brilliant bodies!

The Learning for Life curriculum, which focuses on promoting the health and wellbeing of our pupils, has been taught throughout the academic year. During Term 3, we will be teaching the Relationships and Sexual Education (RSE) element. Specific information about this will be shared in a separate Hub bulletin.

Thank you to all of the families who have signed up to be mystery readers or share a cultural celebration with their class. Having a mystery reader is always a highlight for the children. We are looking forward to our Term 3 mystery readers visiting our Year 1 classrooms!

Please continue to discuss your child’s learning with them. Much of their work is recorded on their Seesaw.

With regard to homework, we will be continuing with our regular system and schedule of:

  • Weekly Common Exception Words will continue to be sent home each Friday and will follow the spelling patterns, spelling families and sounds taught in school. The children are encouraged to practise these spellings following a precursive handwriting style to consolidate their learning. Remember to look in the front of your red book for activities and ideas when revising spellings.
  • Reading each night. The children are to record the title of their book and the pages that they read in their diaries on a daily basis. Please can you, as parents, make notes of any celebrations or difficulties so we can challenge and/or support your child where necessary.

Please find the Year 1 Term 3 key dates linked HERE.

For more information regarding Year 1 for the academic year 2024–25, please refer to the linked Welcome to Year 1 booklet and the KS1 Curriculum Handbook, which can also be located via the Hub.

We look forward to welcoming you back to school very soon.

Best wishes,

The Year 1 Team
