Welcome to Term 3 in Year 1

Welcome to Term 3 in Year 1

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back! We are thrilled to be able to welcome the children to embark upon the final term of the academic year. We hope you and your family had a wonderful and restful Easter break and are ready for an action-packed Term 3 learning about ‘How we Express Ourselves’ and ‘Our Bodies are Brilliant’.

In Discovery this term, the children will be addressing the question ‘What makes a good book’ and ‘What do bodies need to survive?’ In line with this, in English, we will be looking at Esio Trot by Roald Dahl and Funny Bones by Allan Ahlberg.

For further details regarding the ‘How we Express Ourselves’ and ‘Our Bodies are Brilliant’ Discovery units as well as an overview of the whole curriculum for this year, please see the Curriculum Handbook and Transition Booklet linked below:

This overview provides a summary of what your child will be learning this term.

Please ensure you continue to discuss your child’s learning with them. Much of their work is recorded within their Classroom and on Seesaw.

With regard to homework, we will be continuing with our regular system and schedule of:

  • Spelling homework will continue to be sent home each Friday. Please ensure their red books are returned on Thursdays. Children are encouraged to practise their Year 1 spellings whilst adopting our precursive handwriting technique.
  • Reading each night. Children are to record the title of their book and the pages that they read in their diaries daily. Please can you, as parents, sign this.

Year 1  Celebration of Learning – Tuesday 7th May and Wednesday 8th May.

On Tuesday 7th May and Wednesday 8th May, we will have a Celebration of Learning in the Year 1 classrooms. This will showcase the children’s learning and understanding from Term 3, especially related to our ‘How we Express Ourselves’ Discovery unit.

Please find here other Key Dates for Year 1.

Thank you for continuing to engage with your child’s learning; it has been wonderful to see each child flourish in confidence and become such positive, independent learners. Each child has immersed themselves into our Discovery units, and it has been so inspiring to hear about the children sharing their learning with you at home.

Term 1 for next academic year (2024–25) will commence on Monday 19th August 2024. Both Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th of August will be half days, with the children going home at 12 pm for Parent–teacher conferences to take place.

We want to thank each and every child for their hard work and determination so far this year! This will be a fantastic term full of learning for Year 1. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Best wishes,

The Year 1 Team
