Dear Parents
We are really looking forward to welcoming Secondary students back to the DBIS Library for another year.
The aims of the library service are to support student learning, foster a love of reading for pleasure and provide a learner-focused environment. We continue to grow and develop our collection of books, magazines and online databases to match student needs and likes. Links to the library catalogue and online databases can be found on the library website (https://library.dbis.edu.hk/).Â
Secondary students are free to visit the library at a time convenient within their timetable to borrow books and resources or seek assistance with their reading and information needs. The lending policy for Secondary students is as follows:
- Years 7-11………………………..up to 3 items for 2 weeks
- Years 12-13………………………up to 5 items for 3 weeks
- Students are expected to return library books on the day they are due.
- A loan extension is possible for another 2 weeks. Students should visit the library to renew their book loans.
- Students are able to check which books they have borrowed by logging into the library website (https://library.dbis.edu.hk/) using their student number and password. They should visit the library or email [email protected] if they are unable to access their account.
- At key times (e.g. end of term or when an item has fallen considerably overdue) the Library will email overdue notices to parents but the onus is on students to keep track of all items borrowed.
- Please be aware that DBIS policy is to charge for lost and damaged items. This will be the replacement cost of the item plus a small administrative fee.
At DBIS we recognise the incredible benefits that Reading for Pleasure (RfP) provides students. Parents can play a powerful role in fostering their child’s love of reading. Leading researcher on tween/teen reading engagement, Margaret Merga, identifies key strategies that parents can use to influence recreational literacy: support your child’s reading choices; make reading a shared social practice at home (something that is enjoyed and shared as a family); model RfP; provide ready access to books; and engage in reading aloud with your child.Â
Due to the health and safety measures currently in place, the library remains closed to parents. However, if at any time you wish to supplement your child’s reading, it is possible for parents to borrow additional books using our online request system. Details can be found on the library website (https://library.dbis.edu.hk/) along with information about new books, reading recommendations and other resources.
If you have any questions about the Library, please do not hesitate to contact me.Â
Kind regards
Melanie Foti
