Year 10 – Preparing for DBIS Sixth Form

Dear Year 10 Parents/Guardians,

DBIS Sixth Form offers diverse pathways catering to varied student interests and aspirations. We teach a wide selection of A Level subjects and BTEC Level 3 courses, providing different types of assessment and career-progression routes.

On Thursday 20th March, we met with the Year 10 students to outline the opportunities and expectations for entry to DBIS Sixth Form, which will arrive quickly. We emphasised the academic rigour of A Levels and the importance of strong IGCSE results, consistent attendance, excellent learning habits, positive behaviour, and a genuine commitment to learning in order to gain successful admission. We explained that students must meet specific entry requirements to ensure they are well prepared for the challenges ahead.

Student transition to the Sixth Form depends on achieving the required grades in relevant IGCSE subjects as well as transition assessments. Please carefully read the entry requirements for our Sixth Form and each A Level and BTEC course, provided in this document. We encourage you to discuss these expectations with your child, ensuring they understand the standards required for success in DBIS Sixth Form.

As students progress through their IGCSEs, they need to ensure they are doing all they can to achieve the highest grades possible to succeed in their next phase. Year 10 students have several opportunities to reflect on their progress, particularly with the recent release of reports. Following the mock exams commencing the week of Monday 19th May, we expect Year 10 students to reflect on their performance again and identify areas for improvement. This will help them prepare for their IGCSEs and make informed A Level choices. To best prepare for the mock exams, students should utilise the upcoming Easter break for focused study and revision.

As a school, we are dedicated to comprehensively supporting students as they navigate their future pathways. We offer a multi-faceted approach, designed to provide tailored guidance and resources. Key initiatives include:

  • Year 10 Careers Workshop: On 6th June, our Year 10 students will participate in an in-depth careers workshop led by our University & Careers Guidance Counsellor, Cecilia Lau. This session will involve aptitude testing and exploration of the connections between subject choices and diverse career opportunities.
  • Year 11 Information Session: In Term 1 of Year 11, students and their parents will receive detailed information about subject options and DBIS Sixth Form, empowering them to make informed decisions.
  • Individualised Support: 1-1 Senior Leadership Team (SLT) Meetings: Students will have the opportunity for personalised discussions with members of the SLT.
  • Year 13 Peer Mentorship: Year 13 students will share their experiences and insights, providing valuable peer-to-peer guidance.
  • University & Careers Guidance Counsellor Meetings: Students and their families have the opportunity to schedule individual meetings with our University & Careers Guidance Counsellor for advice.
  • Comprehensive Resources – Options Booklets: Detailed options booklets will be provided to students and parents as well as informative videos to further explain the different options available.
  • Options Evening: An options evening will be held to allow students and parents to gather information and ask questions.
  • Teacher Feedback: Teachers will provide constructive feedback on students’ subject choices, based on their individual strengths and academic performance.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s educational journey.

Warm regards,

Amrith Prabhu (Head of Year 10) & Alexander Kilford (Assistant Head of Secondary)
