Year 6 Curriculum Update: Upcoming Class Text and Contextual Learning

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we move into Term 2, we are excited to share that Year 6 will be studying the novel ‘Shadow’ by Michael Morpurgo.

This is a powerful and moving story that follows the journey of a young boy and his dog. A significant portion of the narrative is set in Afghanistan during the conflict there, which is central to the characters’ experiences.

To help the children fully grasp the setting and the events that shaped the story, the Year 6 teachers have briefly discussed the 9/11 attacks in America. This context is essential for understanding the geopolitical background of the book.

In class, we will be sharing the following link to provide an age-appropriate overview of these events:

9/11 Information

The children have already shown great maturity, asking many thoughtful and insightful questions during our initial introductory sessions.

We wanted to make you aware of these topics in case your child wishes to continue these conversations or has additional questions at home. Our aim is to handle these historical events with sensitivity while encouraging the children’s natural curiosity and empathy.

Thank you for your continued support.

Warm regards,

The Year 6 Teaching Team
