Year 8 Geography Field Trip: Wednesday 8th October 8am – 4.35pm

Dear Year 8 Parents/Guardians,

I am writing to inform you about an upcoming Geography field trip for all Year 8 students on Wednesday 8th October, from 8 am to 4.35pm.

This term, students have been studying globalisation and its impact on the world. To provide a real-world context for their learning, this trip will take them into the heart of Hong Kong to explore the question: ‘How Globalised is Hong Kong?’ The main purpose of the day is to identify tangible evidence of globalisation right here in our city.

The day will be a dynamic learning experience with a carousel of three distinct activities:

  • Land Use Mapping of Transnational Corporations on Nathan Road: Students will walk along this bustling road, working together to identify and record transnational corporations (TNCs) and other clear examples of globalisation.

  • A Visit to the Shipping Container Port: We will take a half-day private guided boat tour of Hong Kong’s shipping container port. As a key player in global trade, the port provides a direct link to the increasing interconnectedness of the world economy. Students will conduct fieldwork using techniques like field notes, sphere of influence analysis, shipping traffic counts, and environmental quality surveys.

  • Meeting the Globalised Residents and Vendors of Chungking Mansions: This unique and vibrant location is a powerful symbol of globalisation. People from all over the world come here to trade goods, share ideas, and connect. Students will research remittances and currency exchange, research foreign languages, interview vendors and make observations of the various cultures present.
