DBIS Chinese New Year Celebration 2023

Dear DBIS Community,

We are very excited to be celebrating the 2023 Chinese New Year as it is meant to be celebrated – live and in person. This year, we have prepared three days’ worth of events and activities that will take place across the Early Years and Main campuses. Our daily timeline of events is below:

Date: Wednesday 18th January

Event: A traditional dragon dance and lion dance performance at our Early Years campus. The God of Fortune will visit each class and give out 红包 (hóngbāo) to our Nursery and Reception students.

Date: Thursday 19th January

Event: EY1–Y6 classes will enjoy a full day of Temple Fairs, where they can experience 10 interactive, culture-related activities. Also, a lottery-style “lucky draw” will take place every 30 minutes!

Date: Friday 20th January

What to wear: All students (Nursery, Primary and Secondary) are encouraged to dress in traditional Chinese outfits or red/gold/yellow clothing.

Events:

  • A traditional teacher dragon dance will kickstart the day for Main campus students.
  • Secondary students will compete for their house in various cultural activities, such as ping-pong, chopstick usage, burr puzzles, jianzi, cultural quizzes etc.
  • Primary students will conclude the day with a Chinese New Year assembly to cap off our week of celebration.

Chinese New Year is our most important local festival, celebrating the start of the New Year on the lunar calendar. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the 1st day until the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. This year, the first day of the Chinese New Year is on Sunday, January 22nd, initiating the Year of the Rabbit.

We wish everyone a year filled with joy and happiness!
