Forest School and Woodwork in Year 3

Dear Parents,

As part of our Outdoor Learning and Experiential Learning provision, Forest School and Woodwork is being extended into the Year 3 curriculum.

Outdoor Learning sessions will form part of Thursday afternoon Discovery lessons across the Year group. As part of this, your child will participate in one Forest School and one Woodwork over an 8 week period. Each session will support and extend elements of our Maths, Discovery and English curriculum objectives in a holistic, exciting way.

Our first sequence of learning experiences will explore:

  • Forest Schools: We will follow in Shackleton’s shoes as a survivalist by making shelters (using overhand and half hitch knots), pegging down the creations using homemade tent pegs (using knives to whittle sticks to a point).
  • Woodwork: Measuring accurately in cm and mm to design and create a photo frame for an upcoming piece of Significant People artwork (developing skills of sawing and hammering with purpose).

Children will not need to bring anything additional with them on Thursday afternoons. The school nurse has supplied child friendly bug spray. If your child has particular sensitivities, please speak with your child’s teacher to arrange an alternative.

We know how much the children valued their Early Years outdoors sessions and are excited to develop this provision within the Primary phase of learning.

Best wishes,

The Year 3 Teaching Team.
