Tropical Storm Approaching Hong Kong May Impact the Start of Term

Dear Parents,

The Hong Kong Observatory is currently tracking a tropical storm that has formed to the southeast of Hong Kong. According to its predicted track, the storm is expected to be closest to Hong Kong this Thursday, 25th August, and may therefore impact the start of Term 1.

The impact of the various typhoon signals on school operations is outlined below:

Typhoon Signal Number 1
The DBIS Early Years, Primary and Secondary schools will operate as normal.

Typhoon Signal Number 3 or Above
The DBIS Early Years campus will be closed. The Primary and Secondary schools will operate as normal.

Typhoon Signal Number 8 or Above
All DBIS campuses will be closed.

As always at the start of the school year, there are a number of events and activities scheduled for the first day of term. If the storm does prevent students from returning to school on Thursday 25th August, the following arrangements will be made for that day:

Whole School

  • All learning programmes will be suspended.

Early Years

  • Parent–Teacher Conferences planned for Thursday afternoon will be postponed. At this point in time, Friday conferences will go ahead as planned. Additional sessions will be made available on Saturday 27th August for signup for parents through the existing sign-up codes (see parent bulletin on the Hub – LINK).
  • The Nursery Stay and Play programme will be cancelled.

Primary

  • Parent–Teacher Conferences for Thursday afternoon will be postponed. At this point in time, Friday conferences will go ahead as planned. Additional sessions will be made available on Saturday 27th August for signup for parents through the existing sign-up codes (see parent bulletin on the Hub – LINK).

Secondary

  • The extra tutor time sessions scheduled for Year 7 students after school on Thursday will be cancelled and incorporated into next week’s morning tutor time sessions.
  • The online parent–tutor sessions planned for Thursday afternoon will be rescheduled. Parents will be notified of the new date/time for the sessions via email.

A notice will be posted on the Parent Hub and DBIS website if the school does need to close due to the weather.

Kind regards,
