Welcome to Term 2 in Year 6

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back! We hope you and your children had a wonderful and restful break together after an action-packed Term 1 learning about ‘Ecosystems’.

We are now embarking on Term 2, which looks set to be equally as busy and fun filled as the last term.

In Discovery this term, the children will be addressing the question ‘Why Do People Migrate?’ In line with this, in English, we will be looking at Michael Morpurgo’s novel Shadow and Shaun Tan’s wordless graphic novel The Arrival. The students will also investigate the life of a migrant during our autobiographical writing unit.

For further details regarding the ‘Migration’ Discovery unit as well as an overview of the whole curriculum for this year, please see the Curriculum Handbook and Transition Booklet linked below:

Year 6 Transition Booklet

This overview provides a summary of what your child will be learning this term.

Please ensure you continue to discuss your child’s learning with them. Much of their work is recorded within their Google Drive, Classroom and on Seesaw.

With regard to homework, we will be continuing with our regular system and schedule of:

  • All homework set on Google Classroom on a Friday, to be completed for the following Thursday. This consists of Maths, Discovery or English, and Spelling.
  • Reading each night. Children are to record the title of their book and the pages that they read in their diaries on a daily basis. Please can you, as parents, sign this too.

Year 6 Celebration of Learning – Tuesday 19th March 2024

On Tuesday 19th March 2024, we will have a Celebration of Learning in Year 6. This will showcase the children’s understanding from Term 2, especially related to our ‘Migration’ Discovery unit. We will be hosting a Waxwork Museum, where children will take on the role of a migrant that they have researched and answer your questions in the role!

Please find linked here the other Key Dates for Year 6.

This will be a fantastic term full of learning for Year 6. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Best wishes,

The Year 6 Team
