Welcome to the DBIS Library for 2024–25

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On behalf of the staff of the DBIS Library, myself and library assistants Mrs Lolita Tupas (Main Campus library) and Mrs Nilangi Thotawatte (Early Years Campus library), I’d like to extend a warm hello to all DBIS families.

A primary objective of the library is to provide a comprehensive collection of print and electronic resources that not only support the academic curriculum but also inspire a genuine love for reading amongst all students.

To ensure that every student derives the utmost benefit from their library experience, please take a moment to read the following:

Early Years Foundation Stage and Primary:

  • Classes are scheduled to visit the library once a week, when students will have the opportunity to borrow books to take home.
  • To protect resources from wear, tear and water damage, it is compulsory for every student from FS-1 to Year 6 to have a labelled, zippered, waterproof A3 plastic pouch. These are available for purchase from the uniform shop.
  • Library books and folders must be brought to school on the scheduled library day to enable continued enjoyment of our diverse array of literature.
  • The lending period for these resources is one week.
  • Parents are warmly invited to visit the library with their children before and after school, providing an opportunity to read and borrow additional books.

Secondary:

  • Students in Years 7–9 will have one English lesson per fortnight scheduled in the library, allowing them to explore and immerse themselves in a wide range of books.
  • All students in Years 7–13 will have access to the library, as their timetable permits, for the purpose of study and personal reading.
  • The lending period for Secondary students is two weeks.
  • Students are responsible for the safekeeping of all borrowed library resources and the timely return or renewal of these items.

Over the course of the year, the library team will:

  • Add and promote the best of children’s and young adult literature;
  • Strive tirelessly to ignite and sustain a love for reading in your child;
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to identify materials tailored to the individual interests and abilities of each child;
  • Host and support special events, including Book Week, Battle of the Books, Buzzing for Books and author visits;
  • Provide access and training in the use of our online resources, while working with teaching staff to develop students’ information literacy skills;
  • Offer leadership opportunities within the library to students in specific year groups.

The library staff are truly excited about the upcoming year and are committed to making the library one of your child’s favourite places within the school!

We look forward to welcoming you and your family and to fostering a rich and rewarding library experience.
