Dear Parents and Guardians,
You may be aware that current educational research shows that writing is a challenging area for many children. Being able to generate ideas, organise them logically, select appropriate vocabulary, construct grammatically correct sentences, consider the audience and purpose, and manage the physical act of handwriting all at once is demanding.
As part of our approach to supporting students to become even more able, confident writers who are ready for the challenge of Year 4, we will be using home learning time to provide the children with more opportunities to consolidate and apply the writing skills taught at school.
This week, each child has been provided with a personal writing target. The target will focus their learning for the next few weeks, and has been recorded within their home learning task for Friday 9th May. They have been asked to focus extra hard on demonstrating this in their lessons and in their written response to home learning. We will be celebrating the children’s determination and progress towards their targets in class. Please also celebrate these successes if your child returns home with a certificate of achievement.
As with Reading, Maths and Discovery, you can help support your child at home during their home learning tasks by:
– Prompting them to read their writing aloud and check their own writing for capital letters, full stops, and spelling errors;
– Ask them to explain their writing target and show you where they have used it in their writing;
– Ask them to identify one or two words that could be uplevelled.
In addition, we have linked a list of all the Year 3 writing targets for your own information here: Year 3 Writing Targets
We thank you for your engagement in the children’s writing targets and look forward to sharing their successes with you at our Celebration of Learning event on June 24th at 8am.
Kind regards,
The Year 3 Teaching Team
