Year 9 Options Evening and Options Process

Year 9 Options Evening and Options Process

Dear Parents,

I am writing to you ahead of the upcoming Year 9 Options Evening on Wednesday 13th November. I wish to provide you with an overview of the Year 9 Options process here at DBIS. The key dates are as follows:

  • Wednesday 13th November – Options Evening – ‘Meet the Subjects’.
  • Thursday 14th November – Firm Options choices, online form opens.
  • Wednesday 20th November – Year 9 Parents Evening.
  • Thursday 21st November – Firm Options choices, online form closes.

During the lead up to the Option Evening, Year 9 students will be introduced to the Options process in their upcoming dedicated assembly. This process will then continue during Tutor, 1:1, and Learning For Life sessions. At this stage, students will provide a provisional indication of the Option Subject they might choose – this is just to help us get an idea of the likely demand for each subject.

Later in the process, students will select 4 firm Options Subjects to study in Years 10 and 11 from the subject domains of: Languages, Arts and Technology, and Humanities. Option Subjects are studied alongside the core subjects of English, Maths, Science, PE, and Learning For Life.

The focus of the Options process is not only for students to consider and select their Option Subjects for Years 10 and 11, but also to begin to engage in thinking around where they might want to take their learning in the future. It is of course too early for students to make firm decisions about further education, university, or careers, but what we would like to foster in our Year 9 students, is an appreciation for learning, and an acknowledgement of the possibilities of where learning may lead them to in the future.

I look forward to meeting you all on Wednesday 13th November, but in the meantime, please do engage in conversation with your child about their options, and of course, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Kind regards,
